What You Should Be Doing After Each Workout

The Post-Workout Routine

Many of us have a fantastic pre-workout and workout routine, but after that last exercise, we rush to the locker room and hurriedly continue with our busy day.  The staff at Desinata Retreats, San Diego’s Ultimate Fitness and Weight Loss Retreat, would like to share the importance of also having a fantastic post-workout routine.

Cool Down

Finishing your last exercise does not complete your workout! The first thing you must do is cool down. No matter the intensity or duration of your workout, always do a few minutes of light cardio. This allows your heart rate to slow at a steady pace, which can alleviate feeling sick or lightheaded.

With your cool down complete, it is time to stretch. This is vital! After working out, your muscles contract, and stretching prevents them from shrinking. It allows your muscles to rebuild, grow bigger and stronger, and therefore promotes the full benefit of your efforts.

Stretching also relaxes your muscles, speeds circulation to joints and tissues, and eliminates unwanted waste products, all of which reduce muscle soreness and stiffness.

Drink Water

It is advised that you drink 16-24 ounces of water within 2 hours of completing your workout. Continue to drink water throughout the day to keep your fluid levels up and avoid dehydration.

Eating is one of the last, but also one of the most important, things to do after a workout. You not only have burned hundreds of calories and burned carbohydrates, but you have actually torn muscles. You must repair the muscles and boost your energy level quickly. You should eat within 90 minutes of your workout. Eat foods packed with complex carbohydrates and high in protein. The carbs will re-energize your body and turn into calories slowly. The protein helps repair your muscles so they grow stronger during rest.

So, the next time you are ready to dash off to the locker room, stop and practice these post-workout tips.
